This website is a work in progress, and so am I... At the moment, I am an artist, designer, builder, ninja, brother, and entrepreneur working on becoming a licensed architect. For the most part, I make schematic and construction documents for other architects, builders, designers, and business owners - I am a hired gun, so to speak. Moreover, I can make extremely detailed building information models (BIM) and use this digital technology to generate construction drawings, the possibilities of BIM and my capabilities are endless.

If you have read this far, please know that I am in the process of rebranding everything to Charley Pendragon. Warlock Workshop was a past venture and this website is missing some projects I have worked on over the past year. I am currently working on updating everything! I DESIGN AND BUILD CREATIVE AND AUTONOMOUS BUILDINGS!

-

Read below at your own risk... these ideas are always changing!

I make things with two organizing ideas: architectural improvisation and built animism. In this way, I try and evoke some kind of mystical participation with the design and building process and the ultimate place. This is all a fancy way for saying I want to design, build, and develop places to make our life more like a mythical story. Because I believe our modern world needs more magic. There is a reason fantasy worlds like Harry Potter, World of Warcraft, and Pokemon, to name a few, are so popular. I want to figure out why.  And I want to use my skills as a builder, designer, and thinker to bring some of these ideas to our "everyday" world and subsequently bring awe, mystery, wow, and wonder to my friends, family, and community. This is how I want to make life more meaningful.

Officially, I take ideas from paper to reality.

The Name:

Charley Pendragon is my artist name. Pendragon means chief dragon, or head of a dragon, it basically means leader. My given name is Charles Matheson Hilliard. I want to use Pendragon for my career name because many great artists have a nickname they use for the public. It will give me more mystique.

A Master Builder was the central figure leading construction projects in pre-modern times (a precursor to the modern architect and engineer). "A master builder is recognized as such, not only for his ability to rear a magnificent structure after plans were prepared, but because of his ability to comprehend those plans, and to skillfully weave together the crude materials which make up the strength, the harmony, the beauty, the stateliness of the edifice which grow in his hands from a made foundation to a magnificent habitation." -The Inland Architect and News Record (1887), Volume 9, p. 43

The name Warlock Workshop mainly comes from Joseph Campbell's idea about a reoccurring pattern of characters and events in stories. He calls this pattern the hero cycle. In my case, Warlock connotes the archetypal character known as the hero's helper. The wizard Merlin in the myth of King Author is an example of this definitive role. Think Gandolf or Obi-Wan-Kenobi. This is the type of character who I want to play in your building project.

Architectural Improvisation is about my process of design and building. Just like in improv comedy, the story of a scene, or in this case the story of the building is discovered along the way. I think having a master plan is vital for cost control, however, I think many creative design opportunities are missed during construction in the traditional project delivery process. (to be continued)

Built Animism is the idea that all built things have a personality: Doors, Stairs, Walls, Fireplaces, etc. All of these building elements, to me, are these little creatures with their own spirit. We must discover their names and subsequently discover their visual appearance. (to be continued)
